Description
Victorian Silver Plate Inkstand Featuring Sir Walter Scott A striking example of late 19th-century craftsmanship, this two-bottle silver plate inkstand blends literary homage with refined design. Measuring 12" wide x 7" deep x 6" high, the piece is anchored by a rectangular base with a three-sided bar gallery and supported by four polished ball feet, lending both stability and elegance. At its center stands a substantial cast figure of Sir Walter Scott, the celebrated Scottish novelist and poet. The reverse of the bust is inscribed “SCOTT” along with the dates “1771–1832,” commemorating his life and legacy. The sculpture is signed “H.S. Gainley,” a nod to the artist responsible for this finely modeled tribute. Flanking the central figure are two removable inkwells, each topped with fluted lids that echo classical architectural motifs. The inkwells are symmetrically placed and rest within recessed wells on the tray, which also features a shallow pen groove for writing instruments. Crafted circa 1880, this inkstand exemplifies the Victorian fascination with literary figures and ornamental desk accessories. Its silver-plated surface retains a soft patina, enhancing the depth of its detailing and underscoring its age and authenticity. A perfect addition for collectors of antique writing instruments, literary memorabilia, or decorative silver.
